Also, it is exactly the ...I really like this post. Also, it is exactly the gospel: "One might retort that a moral standard that a person is incapable of ever reaching is unreasonable and unfair." But this is exactly the point! We are ALL completely incapable of reaching God's moral standard. Salvation come to those who agree with God that His standard is out of our reach, and gratefully trust that the sacrificial death of Christ met this standard for us. Then through the miracle of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we cooperate with God to become closer and closer to His standard, through His power, as He actually changes our hearts and our desires, until we reach the New Heaven and the New Earth where we will be perfected once and for all! Yet there are real differences between evangelicals and those who choose a sacramentalist, revisionist, or purely creedal form of Christianity primarily because evangelicals become deeply concerned with things (especially good things) that remove Christ from the center of our lives and our Christian communities.Bob Mayerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04687894332740808001noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14452423.post-69878309151248071182016-10-09T12:12:47.281-04:002016-10-09T12:12:47.281-04:00I commend you for your approach. We have been conditioned to ignore those things that separate us. Valid differences need to be recognized because they define the way we look and act and sometimes that makes a world of difference. It takes courage to point out what it is not. What I love so much is that Shasta has no idea of what he is doing. He is just trying to do what is right, as best he knows it whenever he happens to discover there is something to be done. I think that if greatness is what you desire, then just follow Him and do what is right as you discover it. He will take care of the greatness in a way you never could accomplish for yourself. That's the truly real greatness in my book - the kind He arranges. And I don't think it will be just symbolic or something like that. He knows what you want. It may not look like what you expected at first, but you'll really love it. I promise.
I remain Your Grace's humble servant.
BillAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14452423.post-22856654000894334432014-08-30T19:46:37.885-04:002014-08-30T19:46:37.885-04:00"...something like 40% of gun purchases are a..."...something like 40% of gun purchases are at shows where background checks are famously not required..." Gun shows are no different than posting a 3"x5" card on the laundromat bulletin board; if you are a firearms dealer you MUST run a background check, if you are a private seller, then the laws of the state in which the weapon is being sold apply.

"to purchase weapons that are as removed from the muskets the founding fathers had access to as iPads are to feather pen and ink." (1) Did you not listen to that little voice inside your head when you wrote that? If the second amendment doesn't apply to modern-day weapons, then the first amendment doesn't apply to anything written by modern-day devices, nor does the fourth amendment proctect you from the police using x-rays to scan your house.

(2) You have some serious research to do. Here is a partial (note: PARTIAL) list of weapons available prior to the Founding Fathers submitting the 12 proposed amendments to the states for ratification...

► The Ribauldequin was a late medieval volley gun with many small-caliber iron barrels set up parallel on a platform, in use during the 14th and 15th centuries.

► An unknown German gunsmith before 1600 crafted this oval-bore .67-caliber rifle that was designed to fire 16 stacked charges of powder and ball in a rapid "Roman candle" fashion. One mid-barrel wheel lock mechanism ignited a fuse to discharge the upper 10 charges, and another rearward wheel lock then fired the remaining six lower charges.

► The Cookson Repeater (a.k.a. Lorenzoni System), circa 1680: 12 shot, lever-action breech-loading, repeating flintlock.

► Lorenzoni Flintlock Repeating Pistol, 7-shot and 9-shot versions, circa 1680.

► The Puckle gun, circa 1718, a tripod-mounted, single-barreled flintlock weapon fitted with a multishot revolving cylinder, designed for shipboard use to prevent boarding. Could hold 11 pre-loaded rounds in a cylinder and fire 63 shots in 7 minutes.

► The rapid-fire, Ferguson Rifle, breech-load flintlock, patented 1721.

► Girardoni Air Rifle, circa 1780: 22 round magazine, .46 caliber air rifle. (Thomas Jefferson owned two, and gave them to Lewis & Clark for their journey).

► The Nock Volley Gun, circa 1780: seven 20-inch .60-caliber barrels, one in the centerline with the other six clustered and brazed around it like a handful of flowers.

► The Ottoman Empire had 9-and-11 barrel cannon as early as the 1300's.

► And we shouldn't leave out the 44-barreled mortar designed by A K Nartov and builtfor the St. Petersburg Arsenal in 1754.

Get back to us if you find more interesting weapons. I like the sociology/...This is really interesting. I like the sociology/history.

At the end of the day, I keep coming back to the fact that people who don't care about laws and rules and order and life are going to get themselves guns if they want them, whether or not it is legal. Criminals will have guns regardless of the legality. I heard that the most lucrative profits in illegal sales come not from drugs (as one would expect), but from arms dealing. This will not not stop with tougher gun control laws; if anything, it will increase. So. I would prefer that we all have a right to own a gun, and at least the criminals will not then know for a fact that I, as a law abiding citizen, am surely unarmed.

It isn't that I want a gun. I think I would be a bit afraid to have one in my house. BUT I do not want every criminal to be able to reckon that I don't have one! I would actually probably be willing to pay money to get myself put on a list of gun owners, so if somebody looked me up, it would look as though I have a gun... sort of like how sometimes people just put the sign in their yard that they have a burglar alarm system, whether or not they do.

Guns are scary, but they are even scarier if they are only in the hands of bad people, and no good people are ever armed to protect themselves. We have moved to IL, and for the first time, I find myself walking into buildings with signs on the doors that say guns are prohibited within. Every time I walk into one of these buildings, I am conscious that rule followers (like me) will not be armed inside, and rule breakers will be armed if they feel like it. It makes me feel less, not more secure.

Just saying.ruthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15293058709021665140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14452423.post-48013468460977922132014-07-31T11:56:07.485-04:002014-07-31T11:56:07.485-04:00I have paid a little bit of attention, not much, t...I have paid a little bit of attention, not much, to the current story about the influx of children from Central America. My observation of reality and esp. morality is best explained by the worldview displayed in the Bible.
